Real Malware
NSS Labs sourced real socially-engineered malware on the Internet and tested each solution to see if they could block the threat at its source or during download (Caught Initially on Download) or when the threat executed on the machine (Caught Subsequently on Execution). Fresh malware was sourced during the 9 days the test ran and introduced every 8 hours to the test machines.
Real Solution
The Trend Micro OfficeScan endpoint solution ranked #1(Recommended by NSS Labs) for the second time in NSS Labs independent test of corporate endpoint solutions. Using multiple layers of protection, OfficeScan is able to provide the best overall ability to keep these malicious threats off the network and the machine. Most threats are blocked at their source, the Internet, which means no file needs to be downloaded (saving bandwidth) nor scanned on the local computer (saving computer resources).
Real Test
NSS Labs developed a new method to test anti-malware products against socially-engineered threats using a real-world, online computing environment. The labs conducted independent testing on endpoint products from leading security vendors to reveal the highest levels of socially-engineered malware protection. The testing was unsponsored and noncommissioned.

In September 2010, NSS Labs performed another round of independent anti-malware tests focused on consumer endpoint products and for the second time, Trend Micro ranked #1 in the overall, blocking on download and time to protect areas. These results reflect the effectiveness of the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network™ which powers all of our endpoint solutions and provides the best protection against Internet-based malware as well as the fastest time to protect against unknown threats.
NSS Labs tested live, Internet-based malware over 11 days, testing new threats as well as missed threats every 6 hours in order to identify how effective products are able to protect the endpoint from today’s live threats. By testing multiple layers of protection, blocking the source (A), blocking on download (B), and blocking upon execution (C), the NSS Labs test goes well beyond the traditional file-based tests still used by many consumer reviews. This test mimic’s real-world computing scenario’s and provides a better way for consumers to identify the product that can protect them best from real-world threats.

Trend Micro Ranks #1 in Corporate Endpoint Host Intrusion Prevention Test
Exploits represent a growing threat to enterprises of all sizes. Unlike socially-engineered malware, exploits (aka drive-by downloads) can silently infect users who simply visit poisoned web sites. Even sites like the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and MLB.com have served up malicious content. This makes protection against exploits an important component of any endpoint security product.
In Q2 2010, NSS Labs performed the first ever rigorous test of 10 corporate endpoint protection products. In the category of exploit protection, testing showed great differences between these products, as low as 29% and an average of 67% protection. Trend Micro OfficeScan with its Intrusion Defense Firewall ranked highest, blocking 100% of the 123 exploits used.
